There have been a great many deep questions people have asked over the centuries, such as:

1. Why are we here?
2. What is truth?
3. How many licks does it take to get to the middle of a Tootsie-pop?
4. Where is Waldo?

But, perhaps the most pressing question Volvo owners ask is: What happens if I don't change the oil in my car?

As strong and reliable as Volvos can be, especially compared to some other brands, they still need to have their oil changed regularly. Oil, as they say, is the "lifeblood of your car." Without it, your Volvo will die.

First, oil does several crucial things for your engine:

1. It lubricates your pistons.
2. It lets metal press against metal without any damage.
3. It keeps your engine parts running smoothly and extends the life of your engine.
Second, if you do fail to change your oil, this is what will happen to your engine:

1. The heat from metal grinding against each other will cause the surfaces of the engine parts to weld together.
2. Once that occurs, your Volvo's engine will seize and completely stop working. (Do a Google Image search for "what happens if you don't get an oil change" and see the photos that appear. It's not a pretty sight.)

So, if you continually procrastinate and not get a much-needed oil change for your Volvo vehicle, your oil will also have some issues:

1. Dirt and gunk accumulates in the oil which will, eventually, clogs the oil filter and will cause wear and tear on the engine.
2. All of the additives on the oil (such as detergents, rust-fighters, etc. in both synthetic and regular) will wear out and it won't lubricate your engine like it should.

The reason we exist or the debate over truth are quite important topics and they are a matter of your world view. And, the number of licks to the middle of a Tootsie Pop is a result of any number of critical variables so there is no concrete number.

However, the result of not changing the oil in your Volvo is certain: death of your engine.

The bottom line: Change your oil in your Volvo regularly.  Every 3,000 miles is good no matter which type of oil you choose. (We'll talk about that in another blog post!)

You do that and your old reliable Volvo may last you hundreds of thousands of miles and save you some big-time money on repairs.
